Prices jumped by 227% during the Christmas season? The Spanish said that they can’t afford it!

With Christmas approaching, grapes have become the focus of Spanish New Year celebrations, because according to Spanish tradition, on New Year’s Eve on December 31, people eat twelve grapes in the bell to welcome the New Year, in order to pray for good luck in the New Year.

Grape, as an essential fruit for every family, has seen a sharp rise in demand during this period, leading to a rapid increase in grape prices like many seafood. However, what is shocking is that according to the latest survey of Facua of Spain National Consumers Association, the grape prices in some supermarkets have soared by 227% in the past two months, which has aroused widespread concern in society.

Facua suspected that supermarkets had abnormal behaviors in raising grape prices, so it asked the Spanish consumer supervision department to conduct an in-depth investigation. According to the monitoring data of consumer organizations, the price of grapes in December increased by 44% compared with the same period of last year, despite the government’s VAT relief measures.

Faced with these sharp increases, Facua stressed: “Like other basic necessities, the value-added tax of grapes has been reduced from 4% to 0%.” The organization also promised: “According to the government’s tax reduction law, the prices of these products should not go up unless they can be reasonably increased because of the increase in costs.” Therefore, Facua once again urged the Spanish Ministry of Social Rights and the Ministry of Consumption to investigate whether these large supermarkets correctly applied the tax reduction policy to product prices and whether there were illegal acts of price increase.
